Kate Barton spent her summer doing market research in Montauk. After all, what better place than Surf Lodge to find out what exactly young and influential women really want? “I took a lot of photos of people out there, because it’s really helpful to see what women are actually wearing. And I think it also helps that being one of those younger women, I can gauge what I actually want to wear and what I feel confident in,” said the designer.
With that in mind, Barton’s spring 2027 collection was her most refreshing yet. Not just because of its colorful palette, but also because it seems that Barton has started to find her footing in the contemporary luxury space. She still maintained her signature edge and desire to explore new techniques and craftsmanship, but in a more approachable way. The “liquid look” that Barton came to be known for still showed throughout her pieces, except more subtly. Take for example, the opening look: a multi-colored striped gown covered in clear sequins for that shiny finish that could be dressed up or down.
The collection’s strongest pieces, however, were in the outerwear. Light but structured jackets came with extra sharp collars. They looked equally great zipped up and worn alone as a top, or layered over a T-shirt. To match, Barton even had some new versions of her classic Delia trouser including denim and shorter options. Exploring a more accessible and versatile ready-to-wear collection was definitely outside Barton’s comfort zone. But having done so this season, she considers herself influenced. Maybe all you need is a trip to the seaside to find inspiration.
