Every week, Vogue’s best dressed list tends to spotlight the boldest and most fun looks that Hollywood red carpets have to offer. But sometimes, the standout ensembles of the week are the quietest and most unexpected. This week, for one, A-listers such as Dua Lipa, Meghan Markle, and Elle Fanning all slipped into designs that were subtly-chic. They all found beauty in the art of restraint.
Take Meghan Markle at the David Foster Foundation’s 40th anniversary celebration in Victoria, British Columbia. The Duchess of Sussex chose a black one-shouldered Greta Constantine gown, which felt classic and timeless. (She also wore Princess Diana’s earrings.) Ditto for the black Celine gown that Charlize Theron wore to a Seoul screening of The Odyssey—though hers had a modern update, thanks to the two sweeping draped shoulder details. Forget a dress that makes an entrance—her dress makes an exit.
Greta Lee, always a fashion star, shined in her white gauzy The Row shirt with ruffled sleeves—paired with a classic black trouser. Off-duty in Paris, Gigi Hadid also emerged wearing a white tank and black lace-trimmed slip skirt. Big week for black and white pairings.
That’s not to say the week’s buzziest looks were all so pared-back. A few exuberant moments shined, too, such as Monica Barbaro in her striped Trochopoulos dress; or Bella Ramsey in their Miu Miu sleeveless shirt and buttoned-up vest. A little personality and individuality will always win on the red carpet.
