Dakota Johnson Says Coat Season Has Arrived

The beach towels have been rolled away, the silly skirts are being consigned to the back of the wardrobe, and the last of the empty Chicken Wine bottles are in the recycling. Meanwhile, there’s a freshness in the air, a Meg Ryan movie on the telly, and sales of pumpkin spice lattes are about to spike.

All of which is to say that autumn (and fashion month) has officially arrived, a message Dakota Johnson helped to drive home when she breezed through New York on Sunday wearing a series of seasonal favorites: a trophy trainer (hers are Adidas X Craig Green), The Row’s Bindle hobo bag in a very autumn-appropriate chestnut suede, and a voluminous brown belted trench.

Johnson, it seems, is ready to leave summer in the rear view, having swapped all things crochet and linen for looks that lend themselves to leaf-crunching walks in the park… or in Dakota’s case, promoting your directorial debut on the international festival circuit. The 34-year-old actor wore the same swaddling Leset coat in the city on Friday—that time with brown cords by Essentiel Antwerp—before taking her short film, Loser Baby, to TIFF in the very back-to-business combination of blue jeans, a berry manicure and a Gucci monogram blazer, again in brown.

The fledgeling director recently confessed to overdosing on caffeine while working on Loser Baby, after mistaking Celsius energy drinks for just “vitamins”. But her autumn wardrobe—don’t forget Dakota kicked off September in a custom mocha Gucci gown at a Bulgari event—suggests that while it is possible to have too many caffeinated drinks, there is no such thing as too many caffeinated outfits.
