Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh Both Rocked Floating Straps at the 2024 Oscars

Last night at the 2024 Oscars, a fabulous coincidence took place: both Emily Blunt and her Oppenheimer co-star (or, should we say her “Oppenhomie?”) Florence Pugh both rolled up to the red carpet wearing the same gravity-defying silhouette.

The actors wore dresses with floating straps which instantly perplexed viewers and netizens alike. But we’re here to confirm that, indeed, the straps are meant to float.

Blunt’s dress, from Schiaparelli’s spring 2024 couture show, was made by the eternal proponent the tromp l’oeil, Daniel Roseberry. For the designer, no detail is ever an accident. The floor-length champagne gown was embellished with an illusion of mens’ briefs and a structured tank strap, hovering above her body. While we aren’t exactly sure of the materials used to make Blunt’s straps float, it’s a sure bet that the bodice was impeccably tailored to fit her body as the straps levitated above her.

Pugh also wore a dress with gravity-defying spaghetti straps from the Italian brand Del Core’s spring 2024 collection. The light grayish-blue dress was made with a certain ethereality, from the sheer, bejeweled corset to the structured mini peplum. Unlike Blunt’s dress though, Pugh’s straps were reinforced by an a hidden second normal strap that held up her dress.

While we always say it takes three to make a trend, these two looks made a splash on the red carpet and on social media. We’ll be waiting with bated breath to see if the floating strap catch on, or if it merely was an Oscars night coincidence.
