Women’s blazers were first introduced in 1885, and corresponded with an ease in dress and casualization that aligned with a sense of impending freedom. No more corsets! Even if voting for women was still far off. The mighty blazer has continued to mirror the aligning of culture with dress. The 1980s found ladies in bold shouldered power suits, ushering in an era of corporate climbing and eschewing conventional gender roles. By the ’90s the jacket had slimmed down, revealing a moment marked by economic recession that was mirrored by a more pared-back style ethos.

The blazer doesn’t always have to reflect such sweeping cultural stories—or be as black and white. Right now we’re seeing both fitted, wrap-around, and oversized styles sell out at the same time. That sleek ’90s silhouette is also making a comeback, with The Row showing one of the best versions in a fitted black single-breasted style. And the color for fall seems to be a sultry, warm chocolate brown, done up in leather, suede, and cozy cashmere.

For fall 2024, tweedy, double breasted tweeds at Altuzarra are setting the scene, as well as collegiate-inspired Miu Miu jackets, and Prada’s plaids. In the newer designer arena, Liberowe is making a name for itself with a modern, ladylike take on military-meets-equestrian and Attersee and Loulou Studio are doing away with collars all together.
