As one of tonight’s official 2024 Met Gala livestream hosts, actor Gwendoline Christie was bound to deliver a red carpet look that was perfectly on theme. And the star—who is no stranger to a memorable fashion moment—certainly didn’t disappoint. Kicking off the evening, Christie hit the Met steps in a custom creation designed by Maison Margiela’s John Galliano.
Christie’s look included a black silk tulle opera coat with bands of black crinoline; It was crafted with a special “retrograding” technique, which utilizes variations of thread-work, appliqué, and encrustation from the bottom to the top of a garment. The hand-crafted piece was worn over a blood-orange silk velvet bias-cut column dress, as well as a skin-colored silk satin corset. Completing the look? A pair of Tabi ankle-strap pumps, of course, made in collaboration with the famed red-soled shoe designer Christian Louboutin.
The star’s avant-garde ensemble was inspired by looks in Margiela’s spring 2024 couture collection. Christie has a history with Margiela, of course: The star walked in the show back in January, bringing a sense of drama and theatricality to John Galliano’s new assortment. (She also rocked the otherworldly beauty look created by Pat McGrath.)
This year marked Christie’s second time attending the Met Gala. Last year, the Game of Thrones star attended the Karl Lagerfeld theme in a breezy pink gown designed by Kim Jones for Fendi. This year, she was clearly in a more cutting-edge mood. And it looked, well, fabulous on her.
